    Hermitage Theatre

One of the oldest theatres in Russia was
built by order of Catherine the Great in
1782-1785.

It was constructed by the design of the
architect Giacomo Quarenghi on the site
where the Winter Palace of Peter the
Great had been located.

The first season in the theatre opened on
November 16, 1785. A great number of
brilliant musicians and choreographers
worked for the Hermitage Theatre.

After the Great October Revolution in
1917 the theatre functioned mainly as a
lecture centre. But in eighties of the XX
century the restoration works started and
in 1991 the theatre opened his doors for
public.
