The cathedral was built in 1818-1858 by the architect Auguste de Montferrand. The sanctification of the cathedral was made in May 1858 in the presence of the tsar Alexander II. The St Isaac became the main cathedral in Russia.
It is one of the biggest cathedrals in the world being the fourth after St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, St Paul’s Cathedral in London and Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore.
Many new building technologies were used during the construction of the cathedral such as using the rails, light metal dome and galvanoplasty used for the decoration of the church.
The interior of the cathedral is amazing. Magnificent mosaics icons, brilliant wall and ceiling paintings, the stained glass window of the ‘Resurrected Christ’, bronze door covered with the biblical topics – everything is worth your attention.
It would not be exaggeration to say that St Isaac’s cathedral is the most interesting religious building in St Petersburg. You can also enjoy the view of the city from the cathedral’s Colonnade.
The cathedral was closed in 1928 and reopened as museum. Now this is still the museum, but some services are held in the cathedral. The schedule can be seen at http://www.cathedral. ru/raspisanie_bogoslugenii
