    Khokhloma
The history of the Russian wood painting handicraft
goes back to XVII century. It appeared in the Nizhny
Novgorod region which is located to the east of Moscow.

Khokhloma painting is made usually on the items of the
wooden tableware and furniture. The main colours are
black and red on the golden background. The artists take
the patterns for their design from the nature.
Flowers, rowan tree's branches, herbs and leaves are the patterns often are found in
Khokhloma paintings. Sometimes you can also see fishes, birds and animals on the
Khokhloma articles. Thanks to the manufacturing technique the items looks as if they
are not wooden, but made of metal.

The manufacturing is concentrated in two places. The first is Semyonov cuty which is
located 69 km north-east from Nizhny Novgorod. The second  place, Syomino village, is
located about 45 km north-west from Semyonov city. But you can find the Khokhloma
souvenirs in many Russian cities including St Petersburg.
