The famous Mariinsky Theatre has a long history started in 1783, when a Decree on the establishment of a theatre committee “for performances and music” was published on 12 July. The Bolshoi Stone Theatre was opened on Carousel Square on 5 October 1783. Later this square was named as Theatre Square.
One epoch gave way to another, the theatre building was reconstructed many times, but it didn’t change the main thing – the Mariinsky Theatre always have been the main ballet and opera theatre of the country.
The repertoire of the theatre includes the famous ballets such as The Nutcracker, Cinderella, Giselle, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, as well as brilliant opera performances such as Aida, Boris Godunov, Carmen, Iolanta, La traviata, Madam Butterfly.
