Matryoshka doll is one of the most known symbols of Russia. Actually it isn’t one doll - it is a set of dolls of decreasing sizes which are placed one inside the other.
Matryoshka is made of wood and can be painted in different styles. The number of the dolls is different: from five to several dozens, it depends on the size of the largest doll and skills of the carver.

The first matryoshka appeared in the end of XIX century. It was made by Vasily Zvyozdochkin and painted by the artist Sergei Malyutin. Usually matryoshka dolls are made of linder or birch wood. And at first the smallest doll of the set is made.
The design for matryoshka dolls can be in a traditional Russian style or reflect modern trends. You can find the dolls portraying politicians and celebrities as well as the dolls depicting animals, Santa Klaus and cartoon characters.
Matryoshka dolls are manufactured in many place all over Russia, but the most famous of them is Semyonov city in Nizhegorodsky region.
