The main themes for the miniatures are the stories taken from Russian folktales, songs and classic literature. The style of the Palekh miniatures resembles Russian icons.
The artists use jewellry boxes, powder and cigarette cases and brooches for their work. As the articles are very small, the work requires the special skills and often can't be done without help of a magnifying glass.
Before an article is lacquered and polished, the artist puts his signature on it. Each workshop also has its own trademark.
