    The Peter and Paul Fortress
The Peter and Paul Fortress is a symbol
of Saint Petersburg. It was founded by
Peter the Great in 1703. The fortress was
built by Domenico Trezzini’s design.  The
fortress was built to protect the city from
Swedish attacks, but it was never used
for it.

For a long time the fortress was a base
for the city garrison. Many of its premises
served also as prisons for political
prisoners.

Since 1924 the fortress has a status of
a museum. The museum complex of the
Peter and Paul fortress consists of many
buildings and structures.

The most significant among them are:
  • The Peter and Paul Cathedral
  • Saint Petersburg Mint
  • Boat House
  • Trubetskoy bastion
  • Nevsky Kurtain with Nevsky Gate
  • Commandant House
  • Engineering House

The Peter and Paul Fortress is a part of
the State Museum of the history of Saint
Petersburg. Several permanent
exhibitions devoted to the history of the
city are presented in the buildings of the
fortress.
