The former royal residence located on the shore of Finnish Gulf, 29 km from St Petersburg is recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The construction of the residence began in 1710 under Peter the Great and was continued by his daughter Elizabeth I.
The Grand Peterhof Palace was built in 1747-1752 in the Baroque style by the architect F.B.Rastrelli. The Grand Peterhof Palace is the centre of the whole ensemble, but the parks with the fountains and elegant pavilions is the real gem of the residence.
The Peterhof fountains work without using pumps. The unique water supply system collects water from many small springs and, using the elevation differences, turns the flows to the fountain system.
The most beautiful part of the residence is the Lower Garden. Its area is about 102 hectares. Take the whole day to visit Peterhof or you won't have enough time to enjoy all its charming places.
