The real gem of St Petersburg sightseeing is the former summer residence of Russian tsars located about 24 km south-east from St Petersburg.
The main attraction is the Catherine Palace. The first building of the palace was designed by the German architect Johann Braunstein for Catherine I of Russian in 1717. Later, during the reign of Empress Elizabeth, the palace was reconstructed by Russian architects Zemtsov and Kvasov and then by Bartolomeo Rastrelli.
The palace was seriously damaged, its restoration lasted for many years and still it isn’t finished. Anyway, the Catherine Palace is open for visitors and if you find a time to go there, it will be the unforgettable visit.
Walk the halls of the palace enjoying its rich decorated interiors, one of which – the Amber Room – is world famous. It was made in the beginning of XVIII century in Germany and presented to Peter the Great. In 1770 by the order of the Empress Elizabeth the Amber Room was reconstructed. It was taken out by fascists in 1941 and for some time the room was exhibited in Königsberg Castle, but in 1945 it disappeared and was never found. The Amber Room presented now in the Catherine Palace is the work of the Russian specialists who restored it during 1979-2003.
Not only the Catherine Palace is worth the visitor’s attention. The Catherine Park laid out in 1720s is the wonderful place for walking. Don’t miss also the Cameron Gallery built by the order of Catherine II, as she said ‘for strolls and philosophical conversations’. The gallery is designed in Ancient style and is decorated with bronze busts of Greek and Roman philosophers, writers and poets.
If you are the fan of the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, you can also visit the Tsarskoye Selo Liceum where Alexander Pushkin was educated. The information about the Liceum working hours see at http://www.museumpushkin. ru/info/liceumeng.php
