The real gem among the attractions of St Petersburg, the Church of the Savior on Blood is also often called as the Cathedral of the Ressurection of Christ. It was built on the place where in 1881 the attempt on the life of tsar Alexander II of Russia took place.
The construction of the church began in 1883, initiated by Alexander III. The donations for the building were made by people all over Russia. The construction was finished in 1907.
During the Soviet period the cathedral was closed and used mainly as warehouse. But in the beginning of 1970s the cathedral was attached to the State Museum Isaac Cathedral. By that time the building was in a very bad condition.
The serious restoration work was made to return to the cathedral its original look and state. As museum the cathedral opened its doors for public in 1997.
It is the real museum of mosaics. The cathedral has one of the largest collections of mosaic in Europe. Its area is about 7056 square meters. The sketches for the mosaics were made by 32 artists, among them such famous artists as Victor Vasnetsov and Mikhail Nesterov.
Don’t miss also the unique lining of the walls, floor and iconostasis. The different stones were used for it. Italian marble and serpentinite, Russian rhodonite and jasper make a unique impression on everybody who visits the cathedral.
