Oreshek Fortress is located near Shlisselburg town, on the Orekhovy Island in the Neva river head in Ladozhsky Lake. It was founded in 1323 by the Grand Duke Yuriy Dnilovich, the grandson of Alexander Nevsky. The purpose was to protect the Great Novgorod land from Swedes. The fortress belonged to Russia until it was seized by Sweden army in 1612.
Long 90 years Russia didn’t have the way to Baltic Sea. Only in 1702 Oreshek Fortress was recaptured by the Russian army headed by Peter the Great. Since then the fortress was used as a prison for political prisoners. After 1917 the prison was closed and in 1928 the branch of the Museum of the Great October revolution was opened there.
The place was badly damaged during the Second World War. The restoration work began after the fortress was passed to the Museum of the History of St Petersburg. Still many buildings of the fortress are under the restoration, but it is possible to visit the fortress and see it.
