    Summer Garden
See Summer Garden on the map

The famous Summer Garden is the
oldest garden in St Petersburg. It was
laid out in 1704 in accordance with Peter
the Great’s desire. The design of the
garden is Dutch Baroque.

The spadework started in 1704, but the
main construction in the garden began
since 1709.
As the Summer Garden was conceived as the summer royal residence the Summer
Palace of Peter the Great was constructed in the area of the garden in 1710-1714.

The garden was decorated with sculptures brought by Peter the Great from Italy and
fountains that were the first fountains in St Petersburg.

The beautiful railing separating the garden from the Palace Embankment was built in
1771-1784.

Two pavilions were built in the Garden: Coffee House (by Carl Rossi in 1826) and Tea
House (by Louis Charlemagne).

In 1851-1855 the monument to the Russian writer of the fables Ivan Krylov was erected
in the garden.

Opening hours:

October-March  10 a.m.-8 p.m.
May-September 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
In April the garden is closed
